I just got 3 plants in the mail and will put them in the ground soon. I'm SoCal. Does anyone have experience growing this? I've got a fledgling fiber and dye garden started, this is one of the first plants. Tried growing madder from seed, didn't work too well.
I'd like to dye some yarn, then other yarn with weld and other with a black dye for raw materials for a series of tartan scarves.

Hey Brad I'm interested to know how that goes. I thought that woad liked cool weather and indigo warm, but I have been unable to grow indigo. Where did you mail order your plants & seeds from?

I don't know - gonna try it anyway. I'm starting a fiber and dye garden at the Learning Garden and will try the woad, and indigo too there. You're in L.A., right? They're a very cool garden in Venice at a high school.

I'll look thru my stack, uh, sometime, and find the order form for the dye seeds. One I remember is Richter's. They're on the web.

Brad I saw an advertisement about your spinning/weaving demos on the L.A. Church of Craft emails. Are you in that too? I haven't gone to any of the meetings but have met some of the folks that are in it.

I would love to come out to the Eco village sometime and see what ya'll do out there and meet you sometime.

Thanks for looking up the info on the dye seeds. I have a big garden and am always willing to try and grown interesting things. I will google Richter's right now, thanks, E

I live in Oregon where, unfortunately, it is on the noxious weed list, so growing it in the garden is illegal. However, if you can find it, you can gather all you want. Here it grows in the eastern part of the state, often in gravelly, sandy soil or at the edges of pastures and grain crop (where in invades and takes over). It takes full sun and dry conditions, perfect for S. Cal. I thought it was a noxious weed there too, though? I'm currently trying to find someone who will mail me seeds, regardless of the ban. I'd never let them go to seed in my garden, so no worries there.

My madder is unimpressive. I can deal with an ugly plant, but it's mostly just sitting there. Plus, it will still be a few years before the roots are actually worthy for dyeing.
